Maine Rent Controls Bill Endorsed With Penalty Call
Maine Housing Authority Director James Mitchell backs a statewide rent control bill but urges amendments to include criminal penalties for violators. He cites some 400 complaints of rent hikes since Jan 11 and notes increases average about 30 percent, with a 150 percent high, mainly in Portland Lewiston and Bangor. A tenant Frank McCann testified his rent could jump from 48 to 120 dollars, risking eviction while incomes are limited. The bill would allow increases beyond Jan 11 only to cover higher operating costs taxes and improvements and goes to the judiciary committee May 2.
