A reporter recalls the Hooper street fire with bone weary firemen, smokey faces, and a burned building as onlookers weep and a displaced family laments their losses. An out of town fire truck arrives, a gust of wind worsens the blaze, and a young firefighter learns a safety lesson.
A collection was taken to aid victims of the Hooper street fire. The birthday cake and food were delivered to Biddeford Junior High School for the benefit of firemen and policemen handling the blaze. President Tighe-Beaudoin-Farley auxiliary Maurice Parisien Woodfords and national executive committeeman chaired the drive.
Governor John H. Reed flew to Biddeford to survey the half square mile fire zone that destroyed 18 buildings and left 142 people homeless. He met Mayor Pomerleau and Red Cross officials as a 7 p.m. meeting planned with civic groups aims to organize community aid for Hooper street victims.
