Four Die in Maine Over Weekend Across Drowning Fires and Crash

Four people died in Maine over the weekend in separate incidents. A Colby College student Kenneth Brown 19 of Henniker N H capsized in the Sandy River. Roger Dyer 23 of Wiscasset went missing after an outboard skiff capsized in tidal waters near Westport Island. 80 year old Gertrude Toothker died after being struck by a car leaving Easter services in Wilton. 38 year old Robert Smallidge of Blue Hill perished in a house fire in Surry. A Madison boating accident left seven people dunked with no serious injuries.

Beach Board Seeks High School Addition Amid Space Shortage

Old Orchard Beach school committee, urged by a steady enrollment rise and limited borrowing, calls for reinstituting an unfinished high school expansion. Previous plans for a two story vocational wing and four room addition were rescinded to fund sewer work, though superintendent Dr. Frank D. Lawler says the high school expansion remains necessary as the Jameson school addition is not imperative now.

Police hold 400 African Negroes in Duncan raid

Police and troops with eight armored cars arrested 400 Africans in Duncan township near East London on the first day of a week long boycott opposing South Africa's white rule. The raid aimed to quell a tsotsi element, with one serious clash reported in Port Elizabeth where a Black sergeant was badly injured.

Biddeford Saco Area Observes Patriots Day Holiday

Most residents in the Biddeford Saco area will observe a Patriots Day holiday with many local plants and municipal offices closed or operating normally. Post offices stay open, stores mostly open, and schools in Biddeford Saco and Old Orchard Beach close for spring vacation. The Journal will not be published. The holiday is observed in Maine and Massachusetts.

Kennebunk Church Names New Pastor

Rev. Chester M. Staples former pastor of Littlefield Memorial Baptist in Rockland accepts call to Kennebunk Baptist church. He replaces Rev. Thomas Martin who moves to Athol Massachusetts. Staples resigns May 17 after five years in Rockland. He has military service in World War II and advanced studies at several colleges. His ordination followed service in Wa terboro area and Owl s Head church. Since his pastorates 113 members have joined the churches 85 by baptism 28 by letter. Sunday school now 265 and a new room addition at Owl s Head church debt free. (Continued on Page Eight)

Operation Performed To Save Greek Boy's Life

In New York, skilled American surgeons performed a 63 minute heart operation on four year old Stellakis Parthenopoulos, flown from a slum near Athens after a plea from his Greek doctor. The operation, led by Dr. Aaron Gorelik, ended at 9 38 a.m. with his condition satisfactory. The boy, whose poverty prompted the appeal, arrived last week via Associated Press contact John Wallace. The chief anaesthetist was Dr. Ralph E. Ricciardi.
