Maine officials and local groups discussed two Boston to Portland rail tours as a travel option for weekend getaways. Arguments cited travel time and hidden car costs, with the Maine State Planning Office offering planning aid but no funding.
FBI hunts Patricia Hearst on a material witness warrant after she was photographed during a bank robbery by the Symbionese Liberation Army in San Francisco. Authorities say she may have been forced to participate while other suspects are sought. The bandits escaped with $10,960, two cars were found nearby, and bail was recommended for Hearst and three other women.
Springvale dairy farmer Robert R. Senesac, who owns about 100 cows, says he will stop letting his processor deduct Maine's five cent per hundredweight milk tax. He argues benefits from the commission do not reach him and questions why dairymen should fund advertising. He asks the commission to deal with him directly to collect the levy.
Democrat Peter N Kyros of Portland visited Biddeford Saco to discuss downtown revitalization with local leaders. banker Constantine Karvanides cited apathy and funding gaps while Kyros described a new Consolidated Community Development Block Grants program offering about 500 million for design and planning in small communities.
Howard Johnsons challenges Kennebunk property taxes on two buildings and land leased from the Maine Turnpike Authority. The suit seeks abatement of a 33 168.96 tax bill on 1 285 480 assessed value as of April 1 1973, arguing public use exemptions apply to MTA land and that taxation would be indirect taxation of the authority.
The Treasury imposes penalties up to 10000 dollars and five years in prison to curb melting or exporting copper pennies. Demand for pennies has doubled to two billion in three months, driven by copper prices and speculation about copper value exceeding face value. The mint experiments with an alloy to reduce copper content from 95 to 70 percent.
