First Public Polio Clinic Slated Sunday in Biddeford Saco

Dr. Leopold Viger announced the first area polio clinic will be held Sunday in Biddeford Saco and Old Orchard Beach. Medical teams will operate 2 to 4 p m at three centers with 5000 doses ordered. A two dollar family fee applies with exemptions for hardship.

First Parish Women Elect New Officers at Saco Meeting

The First Parish Congregational church Women’s Fellowship in Saco elected a new slate: Isa belle King president, Alma Harrison first vice president, Carolyn Dearborn vice president, Patricia Bryant secretary, Florence Davis corresponding secretary, Catherine Nielson treasurer, Virginia Moore assistant treasurer, and Marion Walker auditor. The event featured a gift mite box dedication, reports, and a guest lecture by Mrs. Winston Clark on the Hawaiian Islands.

Saco PTA names officers and votes on health conference delegates

At the Saco Parent Teacher Association meeting at Young School, Raymond Hobbins was elected president and Mrs. Robert Warner first vice president. Franklin Thompson became second vice president, with Mrs. Elliot Fink as treasurer, Mrs. Alan Sawyer as corresponding secretary, Mrs. William Searle as recording secretary, and Miss Sara Emmons as historian. The nominating committee was chaired by Thomas Winston. The group voted to send delegates to the P T A mental health conference on May 2 at Westbrook and to protest a proposed education budget cut by Gov Clinton Clauson and state representatives. President Warren Peterson invited members to the District P T A meeting April 27 at Wells Elementary School. Transportation help may be arranged through Mrs. Pet.

Maine House Clerk Bill Receives Split Report

Augusta Maine the State Government Committee today issued a split report on a bill to clarify the duties and powers of the Maine House clerk The measure led by Sen Ezra Briggs would require procurement through the Bureau of Purchases arrange surplus disposal via the Bureau of Public Improvements and maintain a perpetual inventory for presentation on request The minority unfavored report supported by Reps Jerome Plante James Coyne and Leon Sanborn notes opposition to the bill as written.

Offices To Be Closed Monday In Biddeford And Saco

Municipal offices in Biddeford and Saco will be closed Monday April 20 in observance of Patriots Day. City Clerks Ralph Binelle and Albert Cabana announced today. The Journal will not be published Monday.

Leaders Named At Beach Church Missionary Society Meeting

At the Advent Christian church on Saco Avenue Old Orchard Beach the Women’s Home and Foreign Missionary Society elected officers. Ruth Merrill was chosen president with Adeline Archer vice president Edith Gamash secretary Gladys Herson treasurer and committees led by Emma Thurlow for devotions intercessory social and program reporting. Mrs Merrill read a letter from India and refreshments followed. Eisenhower names Dulles successor search begins

President Eisenhower announced the resignation of cancer stricken Secretary of State Dulles saying Dulles is absolutely incapacitated to carry on and that he will announce a successor soon. He noted Under Secretary Christian Herter has acted as secretary and may move up, with other talents considered.

Evening Alliance Elects Officers At Kennebunk

Mrs Henry Dickinson was elected president of the Evening Alliance of the Kennebunk Unitarian church at the annual meeting held last night. Officers include Mrs Albert Smith vice president and Mrs Chester Cram secretary. Plans were made for a rummage sale on May 2 and a Tasty Recipe Supper on May 12 to raise funds. Annual reports were read and the meeting was conducted by President Mrs Robert Bryant.

Search Still On For Site For New Liquor Store

The Biddeford State Liquor store relocation search continues as the commission reviews Alfred street shortcomings. State Liquor Commission administrator Herman Stover says no suitable site has been found after inspections of several locations. The ideal plan requires one floor operations with no basement storage and off street parking plus backdoor unloading. The search has spanned three years.

Atlantic City AP reports from Ft. Knox that scientists showcased thirstless dogs and a menagerie at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology annual meeting. Mexico deported Frank Lawrence Sprenz, a dangerous American bank robber on the FBI list, after capture near Cozumel. He confessed to multiple offenses in Ohio and elsewhere and had evaded authorities by flying under aliases. In Portland he was said to have slept at the Promenade Inn before the case expanded.
