Biddeford city councilor Richard Lambert a Democrat proposes non partisan elections among several charter changes to expand minority party influence. He asks the council to consider the reforms to give Biddeford’s minor parties a chance at political power.
Judge Nicholas Danton orders the two dogs off his East Grand Avenue home after nine noise complaints from neighbor William Sullivan. He may place the third dog with a new home or have it destroyed. Police records show repeated bark warnings and a prior break-in at Danton’s residence.
Police Chief Richard Lumb says he should have issued a summons to Judge Nicholas Danton over barking dogs on East Grand Avenue. Since Feb 20 the department logged eight citizen complaints, plus a 1:10 am Monday call from William Sullivan about continuous barking. Sullivan has made nine complaints since Feb 20.
City councilor Richard Lambert urges a charter change to hold nonpartisan municipal elections with ballots printed without party marks and no primary He also proposes aligning the election with state referenda by moving it to the first Tuesday in November and asks for a charter commission to revise the charter, a request the mayor has not acted on.
Saco teachers Anita Rose and Charlene Thompson will launch Horizons Unlimited for fourth and fifth graders in September. The program, funded by a $500 state grant, offers advanced activities including conversational French. Eligibility hinges on high reading ability, leadership, creativity, and strong IQ or teacher recommendations.
Beginning May 2 the Biddeford Saco Journal and the Sanford Tribune will merge to form the Journal Tribune an expanded York County daily produced six days a week. Casavant says the new paper will offer in depth county news and sports for current Journal readers and Sanford area coverage for Sanford readers. The Kennebunk selectmen vote unanimously to hold monthly public meetings on police affairs. Town manager Barrett will liaison with the police chief, with the first session scheduled for January 19 at 7 30 p.m. at the lower town hall.
