Fat Man Banquet Attracts Dine-Weight Crowd In 1887 Biddeford
In winter 1887 Landlord Yates of the Biddeford House hosted a fat man banquet inviting those over 200 pounds. The heaviest guest was Atty. Benjamin F. Chadbourne at 345 pounds, with John Fairfield Locke at 330 pounds. The event drew many local notables and lasted from 8 p m to near midnight amid a busy kitchen and extra wide chairs and tables.

Walter G. Hatch a Canterbury grave digger aged 81 was buried in Concord in a hemlock coffin he requested but could not be buried beside his wife with whom he lived apart since 1960. The mortician noted hemlock was unavailable so a willow coffin was used sparking his quip about not “going snapping through hell.”
