Spirit Of Nonviolence March In Memphis Honor
Tens of thousands moved in a silent Main Street march to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. under overcast skies at Memphis City Hall Nine teen thousand marchers formed an eight abreast line as Mrs. King spoke from the platform and Ralph Abernathy pledged to return with her to aid the garbage strike. National Guardsmen guarded the route with M 48 tanks amid tense scenes as Mrs. King urged persistence in nonviolence and the continued legacy of her husband. Funeral services were planned in Atlanta for King, drawing families and SCLC members after seven weeks of a garbage strike that stalled union recognition.
