The panel rejected a House Senate order to consider it while wavering on raising sales tax to 5 percent and cigarette tax to 12 cents per pack. Rev. Herman Lloyd Noyes, former minister 1937 to 1945, named interim at United Baptist Church of Saco. He and wife Mrs. Noyes active in denominational work. plans to preach Easter services at 9 and 11 a.m. and will serve until a successor to Rev. Stanley is chosen.
In Portland, a U S District Court jury heard a eminent domain case over land and buildings taken for a new Biddeford post office. Owner Arthur Danis seeks 21000 with government appraisal at 14000. Three Truman brothers sold the rig to Janis, their brother in law, in 1967 after purchase in 1964. The 2.5 story wooden building housed a tavern, offices and three apartments.

Three bills from Biddeford Saco and Old Orchard Beach received public hearings in the 104th Legislature’s Committee on Legal Affairs. Biddeford LD 1272 would permit absentee voting at the city caucus last Monday of November. Saco LD 1278 seeks petition signing citywide rather than at City Hall, with 300 signatures required. Old Orchard Beach LD 1279 would allow Civil Service changes.
Vatican sources report Pope Paul VI observed a fast with millions of Catholics to mourn Christ’s crucifixion. The pontiff removed his papal ring, bells in Rome’s 500 churches will be silent, altars bare until Saturday night as two Holy Week services proceed near the Colosseum. He denounced internal dissent and clergy who refuse authority or marry, warning of a schismatic ferment within the church.
