At Geneva the United States urged the 17 nation disarmament conference to form a panel of experts to study dismantling all nuclear stockpiles. Arthur H. Dean stressed timely start and warned that a binding universal ban cannot be pledged without such study.
An 18 year old boy, Lawrence Pot tle Jr, was fined 300 dollars for trout caught in a state hatchery pool at Pa using a trap. The three to five pound fish were taken illegally. Continued on page two.
Northeast Airlines says it cannot survive without outside help until Jan 1 as Hughes Tool Co. refuses further cash. The carrier seeks CAB approval to suspend service to seven New England points and may seek government subsidies if Hughes transfer of control fails. President James W. Austin cites about 1 million needed to cover debts and contemplates wage deferrals and reinstated salary cuts.

Five California inmates fled San Quentin for 29 hours, but a dog named Duke, spotted by Dorothy Worley in Santa Venetia, led to quick arrests. The escapees, James Dubois, John L. Rucker, Kenneth E. Adams, J F Spatola, and G C Roark, face escape charges potentially adding up to life.
Edwin A. Walker, former Army major general, testified before a Senate investigation accusing a unwritten policy of collusion with international Communist forces. He said the armed forces are paralyzed by a no win policy and that he was a scapegoat after he was relieved of command following controversy over his troop indoctrination program.
Birmingham officials voted to withdraw the city’s share of a county surplus food program after a Negro boycott of downtown stores. City commissioners said seven months remain in the $100,000 program and about $18,750 would be saved by pulling out. Mayor Han es cited impact on business volume and license fees. The boycott followed demands for desegregation in hiring, rest rooms, and drinking fountains.
Ashland Missouri reelects Mayor Lehmen Wren with 55 write in votes as no other candidates filed. Wren complained he would not run again if others paid him and stated he was tired of listening to bellvaches of other people.
