Biddeford Board Backs New 26 Room School Plan

Biddeford's Board of Education and the mayor's watch dog committee agree unanimously on a 26 room elementary school plus a 6 3 3 system. A proposed project would cost about 335000 for the new building or 570000 for an addition to the high school and an 18 room elementary building. The plan also calls for Grade 9 to join Grades 7 and 8 as a three year junior high. The committee will seek city council approval. land and equipment costs are not included.

Option Signed For Space In Saco Industry Park

At the Saco Industrial Park annual meeting directors and stockholders heard of an option for a third site and expected signing an option for a fourth soon. Retiring president Nicholas Scontras said a financial package with a fifth firm was being negotiated. The six-site layout and a new road bid were discussed, with professional help secured at no cost from the city’s industrial agent. The park’s 170 acres eight years ago now hosts two firms North east Gases and Lyn-Flex Industries, with detailed financials presented and officers elected.

Oxford Mill Workers Go Back To Work

In Rumford AP reports that Oxford Paper Co workers returned to the Oxford Mill on schedule, ending a three day wildcat strike. About 1,500 of 2,100 union members resumed duties while management fired three ringleaders who had urged the return to work.

Goulart Ousted as Brazil Declares Break with President

Congress declared President Joao Goulart ousted after a two day military rebellion and Paschoal Mazzilli was sworn in as Brazil’s new leader in Brasilia. Goulart fled Rio de Janeiro toward Porto Alegre promising to fight to the death while Radio Liberty and other outlets reported asylum rumors. The 3rd Army in Rio Grande do Sul was cited as key support as military leaders promised calm across the country.

MacArthur Undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis At Walter Reed

AP reports General Douglas MacArthur, age 84, shows further waning heart and kidney function. A 10:16 a.m. bulletin says kidney deterioration led to a semi artificial dialysis method, flushing poisons from his blood via two abdominal incisions and tubing, in hope of aiding his faltering kidneys. Doctors had warned prognosis remained poor after prior minor improvement in blood pressure and bleeding control.

The boss announced a half-day work morning for all, sparking cheers. He then added another half-day in the afternoon, drawing jeers from the staff.

AMVETS Saco Post Elects New Officers and Slate

Oliver P. Lamarre was elected commander of the Boucouvalas-Dupuis AMVETS Post in Saco during last night’s officer election at the post home on Spring Street. The slate includes Joseph Earl Clappison first vice commander Paul Neault second vice commander Edgar Simard third vice commander Walter Fougere finance officer Eugene Moody adjutant Joseph Ouellette provost marshal and Reginald Blanchard judge advocate. Blanchard Ouellette and James Fennell were elected to the Housing Committee for two and three year terms respectively. Clappison reported 66 paid-up members. Simard acted as chaplain and Ouellette presided as commander.

Sixty candidates file for York County primaries

York County election filings show sixty candidates across Republican and Democratic primaries. Names include William H.
