Kennebunk voters approved a $2.8 million school budget with a clash over budgetary transfer power. Edward Winston urged 72 hours notice before moves between accounts, but his amendment failed as supporters said transfers were needed for emergencies.
At a board meeting in Ogunquit three groups vied for roughly 60 000 of federal Economic Development Administration funds. Officials allocated 351 540 of 414 000 for a new fire station and then 62 460 to upgrade the recreation department by developing an area on Agamenticus Road. The Kennebunk district sought funds for water lines citing water pressure issues and a million dollar project planned for the Kennebunk Wells area.
A 12 hour manhunt ended about 11 30 last night with the arrest of two Sanford men charged with armed kidnapping and robbery. Charles Emery 27 and Patrick Alexander 21 face arraignment in Springvale on armed robbery kidnapping and firearm counts.

Rebel Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre defied Pope Paul VI and ordained 14 traditionalist priests, saying he will not cooperate in destroying the church. He criticized church leadership as thieves and mercenaries while claiming to act for the church’s well being. Lefebvre had been suspended the previous year over Vatican II reforms.
The Maine Senate voted 22 to 9 to postpone action on a bill banning mandatory retirement. Senior citizen groups, active in lobbying, expressed disappointment. Some senators urged review after the July 4 recess to assess social and economic impacts.
