Ogunquit voters debate dune maintenance with the village choosing to begin upkeep today for one month. The board rejects SCS rules, seeking federal input before deciding on dune acceptance while residents press for action or stay.
Overseer Robert Alexandre vows to accept the dunes and the Soil Conservation Service maintenance agreement if the court case is lost. He stated in the Journal Tribune that his campaign hinged on this condition and that accepting the dunes would follow a loss ruling.
Chairman Kevin O'Neil cited a May 11 York County Coast Star article to support a request by the board of overseers to delay action on the dunes. The article referenced Congressman David Emery of Maine and a letter to the Agriculture Department, suggesting opposition.
Brother Joseph and eight other Lithuanian monks live in a Tudor style St Anthony Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunkport. The mansion, once owned by John Mitchell and later William Campbell, was bought for 150000 dollars with 36 acres of waterfront to become a chapel and living quarters. The monks fled religious persecution in Lithuania seeking to preserve their culture in America.

The Maine House and Senate will discuss a bill banning dissemination of pornographic material to anyone under 18 and a related measure requiring opaque cover pages on magazines with explicit sexual content. The proposals authorize notices of obscenity by district attorneys or the attorney general and set court proceedings to determine obscenity with a major House debate on definitions.
The House plans to reconsider the bill today and could urge the Senate to revisit it. Several House leaders say the bill may be dead, though state law caps Maine's minimum wage at $3 per hour regardless of higher federal rates.
