Biddeford Primary School plans a courtyard sensory garden to engage all five senses with textured plants varied colors scents and musical wind and water elements. Librarian Lori Flynn chairs the committee and says the project aims to provide sensory and horticultural therapy opportunities for students.
The Maine Pumpkin Growers Organization hosts a local weigh-off in Sanford on Sept. 27. Seedlings cost 3 each or four for 10 with proceeds funding prizes. First prize 100, second 50, third 25. Growers like Al Berard, Bill Boddie, and Mark Hansen pursue huge pumpkins, with world records around 2,000 pounds. Participants must obtain a seedling from Springvale Nurseries and follow tips on watering, sunlight, fertilizer, and staking.
