Homebuilt 1922 Plane From Nichols Cellar Sparks Local Pride
John Southworth Nichols built a low wing monoplane in 1922 in his Pittsfield cellar with Archibald Isaacs. The craft, assembled from old parts and a Chevrolet engine, flew briefly around town but was never flown fully. Isaacs piloted it at times, wrecking it a few times, before moving on. Nichols, now 78, still preserves a large private machine shop and recalls the project as a local curiosity from early aviation days.
