Vatican Cardinal Urges Freedom Bill At Council Debate
Ex prisoner Cardinal Slipyi urged the Ecumenical Council to proclaim religious liberty as debate on the declaration continued. Cardinal Ritter backed the plea while opposition lingered from several Latin American bishops. American cardinals Spellman and Cushing led support, asserting religion as a human rights foundation. The 54 page document asserts no one should be forced to act against conscience. In Washington, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a House bill to let Secret Service agents make on the spot arrests without warrants.
