Plane crash near Sandisfield kills pilot Albert Meyer Jr.
A private single engine plane crashed in dense woods 244 miles northwest of New Boston, killing 27 year old Albert Meyer Jr. of Springfield. Meyer had taken off from Barnes Municipal Airport at 6 45 pm and radioed a garbled emergency message at 8 15 pm as storms loomed. The crash occurred near Westover AFB radar range with ground contact lost due to low altitude and rugged terrain. Local residents heard distress sounds and a search began, with Meyer's father planning his own inquiry into why the flight occurred amid approaching thunderstorms.
