Pigeon Causes Outage Across Northern Maine

A pigeon darkened 150 square miles of northern Maine after landing on the Houlton sub station tower and touching a 34 000 volt wire. The arc burned insulators, knocked out power for three and a half hours to Houlton and nearby areas, and nearly struck polio patient Donn Carter, 20, in an iron lung. Police said Carter became feverish. Civil Defense provided a generator, and power was restored shortly before 4 a.m. Carter is reported in good condition.

Senate bars payment to U S for withholding state tax

The Senate approved a bill prohibiting the federal government from accepting compensation to cover state income tax withholding from federal employees. The measure, sent to the House, followed Massachusetts’ law paying such expenses. Debate centered on a provision limiting withholding to residents of the taxing state, opposed by Sen. Leverett Saltonstall and others, who argued it would breach existing tax practices. The committee provision was struck after a voice vote, and Saltonstall’s amendment to remove it was adopted.
