Maryland Coach Defends No Punishment After Player’s Heat Death
University of Maryland coach Tom Nugent said Lohr, a 19 year old sophomore center, was not subjected to extra drill or punitive running before his heat exhaustion collapse and subsequent death. Assistant coaches noted Lohr had four ropes drills versus the 10 average and he collapsed moments after signaling exhaustion. Athletic director Joe Blair urged ending innuendo and noted the incident followed a practice on September 2.
