Washington vows firm policy reforms in South Viet Nam despite Nhu and Diem surviving as Suthern leaders. U S limits official travel, delays dependents, and Washington studies Diem Nhu statements amid Buddhist crisis and ongoing war with Viet Cong. Kennedy warned reforms needed for continued support as U S troops remain in Saigon.
Senator Frank Church warned he may introduce a resolution to halt all U.S. aid to South Viet Nam if the Diem regime does not enact drastic reforms. The two hour briefing by the Far Eastern Affairs subcommittee on Diem’s handling of Buddhists drew protests from Church and Senator Lausche who supported Kennedy's call for policy and personnel changes.
The forecast projects temperatures through Wednesday averaging about 61 degrees, near normal. Expect a warmer weekend, cooler Monday and Tuesday, a warmer Wednesday, with showers late Sunday and around Wednesday.
Saigon reports Vietnam formally asked the United States to hand over three Buddhist priests who sought refuge in the U S Embassy after a crackdown on the Xa Loi Pagoda. Thich Tri Quang, a leader of the protests, along with Le Mai Chi and Tran Van Nham, sought asylum following the August 21 raid.
In New York yesterday Carmine De Sapio lost the Greenwich Village district leader race by 41 votes to Edward Koch, signaling a reform gain. Gov Rockefeller’s cousin Richard Aldrich won the Manhattan councilman at large GOP primary by 342 votes over John Lamula, in a test of Rockefeller popularity. O'Dwyer edged Blaikie and Young for the Dem nomination. County figures Gaughan and Regan won GOP nods despite GOP opposition.
UPI reports Massachusetts Turnpike Authority Chair William F Callahan revises plans to bring the toll road link into Boston. The plan avoids filling eight acres of Charles River land and instead proposes a 3000 foot bridge on pilings over the New York Central Railroad tracks near Allston, avoiding MDC land and aligning toward a viaduct from Cambridge Street Allston to near Boston University Bridge. The move follows a state supreme court ruling limiting eminent domain over MDC land.
A C46 Air America transport on a relief mission in southern Laos disappeared Thursday evening with three Americans and three Laotians aboard. A spokesman said the search has been unsuccessful and the names of those aboard were withheld. Air America operates for the Laotian government under a U.S. aid contract.
In Huntsville Alabama a group of about 25 mothers entered East Clinton Grammar School with their children despite Governor Wallace ordered closure. Troopers blocked further entry, and at Fifth Avenue School the first Negro child to attempt entry was turned away. FBI agents accompanied the Hereford family. no agents with the Brewtons. The governor's aide indicated the closure would be only for one day.
Senator Javits urged Kennedy to consider sending U.S. marshals or troops to Alabama to reopen schools slated for integration. Wallace used police powers to close four Huntsville schools, backed by state law but opposed by the city council and school board. troopers blocked children from entering.
Peking accuses Moscow of subverting Sinkiang's Ili district government and luring tens of thousands of Chinese into the Soviet Union to act as a fifth column. It cites 1958 demands by Khrushchev and a 1962 campaign across Sinkiang as proof of Soviet intent, warning of a near split in Communist unity.
A five helicopter Navy squadron was ordered to evacuate men from the Texas Tower and Tower II off Cape Cod as storm winds battered the offshore towers. Coast Guard ships and air units were en route to stand by, with Navy expected to complete the lift within four hours after takeoff from Quonset Point.
London police investigated a truck theft and found a stolen license and license plates under a crib mattress during a quiet search at Albert Carroll's apartment. Nine month old Steven Carroll cried revealing the evidence. Carroll, a 28 year old professional boxer, received one year in jail for receiving the stolen license.
