In Berkshire County a six year old law imposing up to 50 fine for discarding refrigerators with doors left on was applied for the first time. Walter F. Margraf Jr., 28, pleaded guilty to removing a door from a discarded refrigerator left where children could reach it. Judge Albert Clark fined him 50 but remitted the amount after testimony. Margraf, father of four, said the appliance was in a truck in his yard with the door jammed shut. Trooper John Erdeski warned the door could be opened by neighborhood youths, creating a danger. The judge noted the law’s seriousness and urged others to remove doors from discarded fridges. Margraf promised to spread the word in his small town. A county-wide check showed Lee district court was the first Berkshire case under this statute.
