New Haven Cops Cleared of Excessive Force Charge
New Haven police were cleared of excessive force in breaking up a May 10 sit in at Mayor Richard C. Lee's office. The police commission found insufficient evidence to support the charges from CORE, noting the force used was necessary and properly called for. Twelve demonstrators were arrested and eight received suspended sentences. Lee was away during the protest over substandard city housing for a Black woman and her nine children. The Monarchs Junior Drum and Bugle Corps will join Springfield's seventh annual Columbus Day parade hosted by Italian-American groups, starting at 2 p.m.
