Soldier who refused Viet Nam duty is convicted at Ft. Sam
Pfc. Winster R. Belton, 26, Milwaukee native and former college star, was found guilty by a five member court martial at Ft. Sam Houston for starving himself to avoid Viet Nam service and sentenced to five years at hard labor with a dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay. The sentence will be suspended and could be reduced or converted upon completion of the tour. Belton had negotiated a plea deal with prosecutors for a lighter sentence in exchange for a guilty plea, a pact kept secret from the court. The agreement was arranged with Lt. Gen. Colglazier, who could order reassignment to Viet Nam after confirmation. An Army spokesman said the aim was to keep publicity low.
