Sugar Prices Rise On Speculation From Soviet Wheat Trade
Washington reports sugar prices climbed despite ample supplies and forecasts of record year end stocks. The Agriculture Department tied gains to Soviet purchases of 500 million dollars in Canadian wheat, while noting a Soviet beet sugar unit may have had good supplies. End year inventories may reach 3.5 million tons, with 2.75 million tons on hand at the start of 1963. Raw sugar rose from 6 to 8.5 cents per pound between August and October.
