Ansonia Hotel Built by Stokes in 1900
The Ansonia on Broadway and 73rd Street, begun in 1899 and finished in 1904, is highlighted as a Manhattan architectural treasure. W E D Stokes of Lenox is not the architect. his father designed the fortresslike hotel with copper roof and 1,000 rooms. The elder Stokes, Yale alumnus, also contributed to Riverside Drive and built roof gardens, with a plant in Perth Amboy to manufacture terra cotta for the facade. The hotel faced later crises during tenant rent controls in World War I and was sold in wartime, now an apartment house, but preserved as a landmark linked to the Ansonia family.
