Basic Education Course Deferred To January In Pittsfield

A free basic education program for adults lacking schooling beyond the sixth grade is postponed to January. Asst. Supt. Joseph J. Canavan reports 16 enrollees, ages mostly 35 to 40 with two in their 20s, planning two classes of 10 to 20 students. Sessions meet twice weekly, two hours each, likely at Pittsfield High School. If demand grows, courses may move to a local elementary school. The state urges two to four initial classes, expanding as needed. About 4,024 residents over 18 lack sixth grade completion per recent census. Ninety percent of costs come from federal anti poverty funds, with ten percent from the community. The School Committee has approved the program.
