North Carolina Senate approves speaker ban overhaul
The North Carolina Senate approved a revised speaker ban law 36 to 13 after a bitter debate, joining the House which had passed it 75 to 39. The measure shifts campus speaking decisions to college boards, ending a yearslong controversy over the 1963 act banning Communists or those who plead the fifth from speaking on state college campuses. The change, drafted by a nine member study commission, responds to objections from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools which planned to review the university’s accreditation at a November meeting in Richmond Virginia.
