Submarine Demonstrated With Rotating Fin Propulsion
Washington AP The Navy research office showed a scale model of a submarine powered by two rotating bands of fins around the bow and stern. Cmdr Frederick R Haselton said the design could provide slow speed deep diving and quiet operation beyond present propeller subs. He outlined uses in rescue oceanography detection of enemy gear and underwater towing plus potential for large missiles from a vertical nose-up pose. The fins and motors lie outside the pressure hull in salt water with GE and General Dynamics testing feasibility.

Flowers Fruit Growth Speeded by Curb Treatments
A U S Department of Agriculture report cites experiments by Dr P C Marth at the Baltimore center showing flowering and fruiting of most fruit trees could be hastened by growth retardants by two to three years. The work with holly wood herbs indicates nut trees may bear sooner as well. Marth researches plant development in a pioneer hormone laboratory.
