Ten Adults Sign Up for Pittsfield Basic Education Plan
About 10 Pittsfield residents enrolled in a new adult basic education course to be taught in public schools. Assistant Superintendent Joseph J. Canavan reported the plan aims to start with about 106 students, with 90 percent funded by federal anti poverty funds. Classes would run in late afternoons and evenings, and mornings for groups of women, possibly using space outside schools if needed, and officials approved the plans.

United Fund Passes Near Goal in Berkshire Drive
The United Fund drive in Pittsfield Laneshow n Lenox reached 99.56 percent of its goal with a new total of 496 555 announced at noon leaving 2184 still needed for tomorrow mornings final report. Campaign Chairman James J Smith praised the advance corporation division for surpassing quota. The neighborhood division led by Mrs George P Hunt Jr hit 102 4 percent. Smith urged captains to submit reports before the Red Feather House breakfast meeting.

About 150 attended the Jaycee-Ettes fashion show and party at the Holiday Inn in Lenox. An estimated $100 was raised for a mobile bandstand for the Department of Parks and Recreation. Three year old dies in Pittsfield house fire
In Pittsfield a two story duplex fire yesterday killed Joseph Jody Houghtaling 3, injured his brother 16 months old and Firefighter Eugene McCarthy, left two families homeless. The blaze at 93 Daniels Ave caused extensive damage. investigation by Lt. Det. Milo Brown Jr and state trooper Richard Clemens deemed accidental though several details remain unresolved. Babysitter James Corkins 29 was nearby and helped rescue a baby girl later cared for by a neighbor as firefighters fought the flames and searched for Joseph. Burial is planned at Pittsfield Cemetery after services at Meehan Funeral Home.

The Pittsfield School Department has filed its first requests for funds under Public Law 89-10 the Aid-to-Education Act. Under Title I Pittsfield will receive up to 229000 dollars if it writes acceptable programs to improve opportunities for educationally deprived children including those from needy families and with disabilities.
