Judge Hoffman's Contempt Sentence for Seale Faces Appeal

Federal Judge Julius Hoffman convicted Bobby Seale on 16 counts of contempt and sentenced him to four years in prison while declaring a mistrial on the conspiracy charges tied to the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Seale argued the ruling violated his constitutional rights as he defied the judge and branded Hoffman a racist and fascist during a 93 minute decision reading. The incident followed Seale's attempt to address the court and a related suit by 26 lawyers seeking to permit him to defend himself, which was dismissed.
