Apathy Among Union Members Blamed for 14B Defeat
New York reports that the AFL-CIO’s failure to repeal Section 14B of the Taft Hartley Act stemmed from apathy among 13 million dues payers. Polls cited by large unions show rank and file seeking greater job protection, a shorter work week, broader minimum wage coverage, and a raise from the current 1.25 hourly rate. The issue stalled a Senate filibuster led by Everett Dirksen and remains a central goal for 1966.
