FAA warns private pilots show larger drunken flying problem
Washington FAA officials told a House subcommittee that autopsies of 50 crash victims reveal a surprisingly serious alcohol problem among private pilots. Najeeb Halaby, speaking before resigning as FAA administrator, noted about 500 fatal general aviation crashes yearly with 900 to 950 deaths, and said one third of 1963 samples showed alcohol influence. He urged tougher rules, including a ban on flying within eight hours of drinking any alcohol.
