Treasury to end silver coinage and pursue nonsilver dollars
The Treasury asked Congress to authorize production of nonsilver half dollars and dollars, ending silver coinage while restoring similar coins to circulation. It also lifted the ban on melting old silver coins, trimmed weekly surplus silver sales to 1.5 million ounces, and planned to sell 29 million rare silver dollars from vaults. The moves aim to boost coin circulation amid inflation and potential vending machine use.
