Financial Empire Starts With Ad in Tampa Tribune
James W. Walter, who built a $600 million financial empire from a 60 cent classified ad, received the 1969 International Prominent Citizens Award from the Association of Newspaper Classified Advertising Managers. His shell home idea began with a two line ad in 1946, selling unfinished houses for 895 dollars, leading to a large ad expansion, a partnership, and the launch of the shell home industry. Walter later bought out partners, formed Jim Walter Corp, and the company grew to major sales and NYSE listing in 1964. Walter’s ventures targeted hundreds of thousands of low income Americans.
