City to study 1000 pupil high school plan at 1.9 million

Mayor Dillon will send a recommending plan to the City Council within two days. The Capital Outlay Committee backs a 1,000 pupil comprehensive high school at 1.9 million, with a 10 member building commission and an inventory of current equipment before new purchases. The School Department urged a larger 1,425 pupil, 3.6 million project, but Dillon favors the smaller option given the city’s finances.

MacArthur Improves Slightly But Remains Critical

Washington bulletin reports General Douglas MacArthur in a critical condition with kidney trouble improving slightly. Doctors say heart function and vital signs are stable while intermittent esophageal bleeding is controlled by a tube. The 84 year old five star general remains under care at Walter Reed Hospital.

Mrs Peabody Party Rebuffed in South St Augustine

In St Augustine Florida four New England women and two African Americans faced segregation protests as a lounge refusal led to arrests. Mrs Burgess a Newton Center Mass Negro and wife of an Episcopal bishop remained jailed after being charged with trespass and conspiracy. Also arrested were Rev England and Rev Clark among others as demonstrations spread to additional restaurants and a drug store lunch counter.

Barrington Minister's Son Reports by Tape on Quake

Great Barrington residents learn via tape from Donald Keil Jr in Anchorage that the Friday Southern Alaska quake shook homes for six to eight minutes. He and his family, just home in Spenard, described lamps falling, a chandelier striking the ceiling, and brown sand spurts through snow while power flickered. Mr Keil, a deputy FAA chief, noted hospital damage and rationing as stores stocked emergency supplies.

Stockbridge Billed for Private Land Clearing Damages

Stockbridge records show a $5,000 bill from Swarm of Cherry Hill Road resident John Butler Swann for damage to large maples and privacy loss due to roadside clearing in front of his property. He states highways officials ignored his request to stop work beyond his boundary, calling it a vicious trespass. The matter will be referred to Town Counsel Donald J. Shaker.

Boston Symphony to Perform for White House Children

Thirty six principal members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra travel to Washington to play a children's concert at the White House invited by Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson and her daughter. Erich Leinsdorf conducts a suite by Richard Strauss after Molière's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. about 200 embassy children will attend. The concert was scheduled for television at 4 30 p.m.

New Freeze in Southland Hits Peach Crops Hard

Subfreezing temperatures grip the Deep South with earlier freezes causing heavy losses. Peach crops in South Carolina and Georgia are estimated at 32.5 million dollars, with potential higher losses after Monday night. Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina also report heavy damage, while south Florida vegetable crops are spared. Early north Florida readings dip below freezing, though few crops are present.
