Moscow reports Voskhod 2 returned safely with Col. Pavel Belyayev and Lt. Col. Alexei Leonov aboard after about 24 hours in orbit. Leonov’s 10 minute spacewalk marked a milestone toward moon missions as officials praised the complex experiment and new autonomous life support.
Weather remains gloomy for Tuesday launch as Virgil Grissom and John Young complete last full scale training. The two astronauts participated in a 12 hour world network test and will enter a simulated capsule for familiarization with launch and re entry during their planned three orbit mission near Perm.
Albert F. Litano won the IUE Local 255 presidency with 1,893 votes to Joseph J. La Casse 1,430. Ralph J. Frojo and Henry Melideo were defeated. George V. DiPalazzo was reelected unopposed. Burke and Mackowski aided Litano. turnout was 3,399 of 3,849 eligible.
Rembrandt's portrait of his son Titus fetched 2,234,400 pounds in London, set against the 1962 New York sale of Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer for 2.3 million. Nashville Tenn AP Gov Frank G Clement commuted the death sentences of five men to 99 years ending a long battle over capital punishment. Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, Romania’s president and Communist party chief, died in Bucharest at age 64 after pneumonia and a liver ailment. He led Romania toward greater independence from the Soviet Union, and his death followed a coma as a cabinet reshuffle occurred earlier that day. Born in Birlad in 1901, he rose from railway worker to party organizer after militant labor activity and endured persecution that inspired him to adopt the Dej name.
President Johnson planned a quiet weekend at his Texas ranch in his first visit in two months. He arrived after a delay caused by developments in the Alabama race issue and said he would mobilize the Alabama National Guard to shield civil rights marchers if Governor Wallace cannot or will not act.
