Sprague Electric Reports Sharp Decline in Earnings
Sprague Electric Co. reports 1963 sales of 83.26 million dollars, down 4.25 percent from 1962, with net profit after taxes 4.63 million and earnings of 2.99 per share on 1.55 million shares. Despite the decline, the year was among the company’s best in 37 years. The fall is blamed on lower sales volume, intense price competition, higher development costs, and defense program reductions. The firm projects a defense rebound and growth in industrial and consumer markets, as microelectronics R&D expansion is expected to boost future earnings. The dividend remains 30 cents quarterly, with a 2 percent stock dividend.
