Washington Zoo director Theodore Reed testified before the House Appropriations Committee on escalating animal prices. He cited giraffes doubling since 1956 and leopards rising from 250 to 400, plus rare pythons costing 10 dollars a foot and other species climbing in price due to dwindling wild populations. He highlighted gorilla births and rhino losses, and urged support for a medical investigational unit to study snake diseases and parasites.
