State Official Responds to Charge
Chard N. Power director of general environmental control for the state Department of Public Health told The Eagle he did not think the Public Health Council had significantly varied Monument Valley Road property as a sanitary landfill site. He discounted political influence as a factor in the recommendation that the site be used only as a last resort after failure at other locations in the town. He noted a letter from Dr Arthur L Cassel criticizing the state's recommendation and said no reply had been prepared yet. The state intends to consider all alternatives before finalizing a site.

Public Health Feud Over Monument Valley Landfill Site
Dr. Cassel accuses the state Department of Public Health of political influence hindering sanitation efforts in Great Barrington. He urges the Selectmen to take over dump maintenance and site selection, citing a lack of reason for designating the Monument Valley Road parcel as a last resort. A state hearing, Open Heart Club involvement, and a possible writing offer of land are noted amid unclear zoning and health risk questions.
Dump Issue Dropped In Selectmen's Lap
Great Barrington Mass Board of Health votes unanimously to hand maintenance of the town dump and site selection for a sanitary landfill to the Selectmen and Planning Board in advisory capacity. Dr. Arthur L. Cassel criticizes state support, and motion to rescind Monument Valley Road site is debated but left to the Selectmen.
