Norman Rockwell Sees Americana Change in Art
Norman Rockwell, after a 53 year career, says his goal is to paint to bring America together and promote understanding. He notes publishers no longer favor his old American illustration style and discusses race, politics, and the space program as currents shaping his work. He remains active, not considering retirement, and reflects on changes in audience and themes since the Saturday Evening Post era.

Leyden Pupils Read Bible Amid Supreme Court Ban
Leyden elementary students began classes Monday with a Bible reading and Lord's Prayer in defiance of a Supreme Court ban. The School Committee had voted to require teachers to read a nondenominational prayer or Bible passage, with 77 pupils in the school. Superintendent Kenneth H. Sheetz said teachers endorsed the idea after a poll. Committee member Gerald McCarthy said the move aimed at countering what they see as schools encouraging atheism. Meanwhile in Boston the House killed a bill to limit West Springfield water taken from wells in Southwick, 143-73, after opponents argued it would be unconstitutional.

Connecticut voters say poll workers used Farmington Valley Herald editorials to guide ballot questions. The $4.3 million school budget was rejected after prior cuts by the Board of Education.
