Akron Ohio AP The first round of the $125000 American Golf Classic at Firestone Country Club saw 27 subpar rounds on the 7180 yard South Course. Bob Mitchell and Terry Wilcox shot 65 to lead, with Nicklaus one stroke behind at 66. Bert Greene Tom Nieporte Steve Reid and Ray Floyd followed at 67. Nicklaus praised his putting and improving length while conceding he did not play at his best.
