Construction Welfare Take-Over Cuts Tax Rates in City
Mayor Butler cites 2 per cent base broadening boosted by General Electric’s new building with final assessment at $8.8 million. City Assessor John Connors notes 1968 gap closed as completion effects weigh on the tax base. State welfare pickup of Pittsfield's welfare expense saved about $1.7 million, easing burdens while other urban renewal projects loom. Berkshire Common near West and South streets and the Western Massachusetts Electric turbine generators are expected to add about $6 in assessments next year.
