Changing Times Force Closing Of Cushman’s Bakery
Cushman’s Bakery, a New England institution based in Portland, Maine, is going out of business. Once a regional leader with route sales and house to house deliveries, the firm declined as suburban supermarkets and the second family car reduced demand for door to door bread. The Lynn, Massachusetts plant was sold in 1967, jobs cut from 1,500 to 250, and bankruptcy trustee Jacob Agger cited lack of a buyer as the reason for the closing.
