Lightning Kills Boy At Hotchkiss Golf Course
A violent thunderstorm in the South Berkshire area killed an 11 year old Hartford youth, Gordon Brown, at the Hotchkiss School golf course in Lakeville while he ran with two friends. The bolt struck near their open position as doctors struggled for over two hours to revive him at Sharon Memorial Hospital. The storm also caused power outages affecting nearly 400 families in Otis and damaged homes and property in Blandford and North Blandford. Two horses at Eastover in Lenox named Rebel and Golden Ace, about 30 years old, were killed by the same lightning strike.

Tailor From Portugal Is Local Success Story
Cesar H. Cerveira, who arrived from Portugal three years ago, expanded from a small Union Street shop to own a building at 21 Melville Street. He follows older brother Manuel, who rose from a modest tailor shop to significant real estate holdings, including the Daly Block and multiple rental properties after moving from Portugal a decade ago. Manuel’s growth paralleled Cesar’s ascent as both built lasting businesses and property portfolios in Pittsfield.

Councilman sounds alarm over master plan and out-of-town developers
Pittsfield councilman Richard W. Paul warns that 60 to 700 federally aided units in the new Zoning Master plan would shrink the city's tax base while necessitating higher taxes for sewers water facilities schooling and police fire protection. He cites New York City syndicates eyeing “slum apartments” and names developers including J Alan Ornstein and groups based in Hartford and New York City as having made wise investments. Paul vows to keep residents informed with a map modeling 1974 city layout and urges voters to decide their own future.
