East Germany Drives Industrial Push For Autonomy
BERLIN NANA East Germany expands key industrial projects near the Polish frontier to cut dependence on West German trade. A $220 million Schwedt petrochemical complex on the Oder is the leading project, with Eisenhuettenstadt adding a fully automatic steel plant for about 8,000 workers. A $500 million lignite coal complex near Cottbus aims to supply gas and power, replacing Ruhr coal. The pipeline from the Soviet Union and Poland feeds crude to the region, targeting 2 million tons annually by spring and full refining by 1975. East Germany seeks self sufficiency to reduce West pressure while lifting living standards through heavy industry.
