GE official Britton W. Saterlee said customer needs and long employee vacations require three week plant shutdowns in the power and distribution transformer department. He noted over 85 percent receive at least three weeks and over 50 percent four weeks, and that staggering longer vacations could hurt production and service. He added union officials were told last year the policy might lengthen shutdowns at some locations and that not all desires can be accommodated while preserving job security and competitiveness.
