Nation's Only Black U S Attorney Says Justice Dept Out To Get Panthers
Cecil F. Poole the lone Black U S attorney in the nation calls the Justice Department grand jury probe of the Black Panther Party in his district silly and wasteful and says Washington ordered it without consulting him. He resigns March 31 after serving since 1961. Poole criticizes the action as harassment and notes tensions around arrestee David Hilliard. A DOJ spokesman denies harassment and affirms trust in its U S attorneys. Poole says the probe targets the Panthers for policy extremes and warns a hard, selective approach may overlook broader issues.
