Renovation Plan in Doubt Private Housing Group To Focus on New Buildings

GREAT BARRINGTON Construct Inc a private housing group reports trouble with plans to buy and renovate a Hillside Avenue two family house. The Farmers Home Administration prohibits refurbishing three story dwellings for public housing unless waived. The group will shift focus to building new low and middle income units. Officials cite high renovation costs for roofing plumbing and electrical work as a factor. The Human Relations Council plans to press housing authority for help addressing a serious housing problem. Candidate John W P Mooney says the authority may resist and urges concrete proposals to hold them to task. The authority has addressed elderly low rent housing but not broader low and middle income housing needs.
