Palestine Guerrillas Build Forces to Pressure Israel
Five years after a Lebanon refugee camp raid against Israel, Palestinian guerrillas say they have grown from 82 to about 1,700 active fighters with 20,000 supporters. Led by Yasir Arafat of the Palestine Liberation Organization, they claim monthly armed actions around Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. They seek a nonsectarian state, rely on support from Arab regimes, and plan a long, attrition-style campaign to weaken Israel while remaining outside a unified Arab front.

Detroit Officers Volunteer Days Off For Crime Fight
Detroit police volunteers donated more than 1200 unpaid hours in December to the 7th Precinct as a holiday crime-fighting effort. Patrolman Joseph Wahl says the campaign improved police community relations, with residents noticing their dedication. Some residents praised the gesture, while others wanted more visible effort, but organizers plan further programs to deepen ties with the community. Annie Watkins of a black club supports the Cop for Christmas idea.
