Massachusetts Attorney General Robert H. Quinn files bills to treat alcoholism as a disease not a crime. Proposals seek emergency care facilities for intoxicated persons, option of treatment instead of jail for minor crime charges, and a statewide study of alcohol laws including drunk driving and manufacturing or selling alcohol.
A Pittsfield School Department committee led by Lawrence J. Murphy studies an open curriculum for the city’s secondary schools. It would let students cross track lines and take courses above or below their current level, with guidance on suitability and a plan to allow changes during high school.
Governor Fran Sargent nominated Tullig A. Francesconi of Springfield to be justice of the new Springfield Juvenile Court. Francesconi, 58, has long practiced law in Springfield, taught at Western New England College, and helped form Neighborhood Legal Services Inc. He also served on the city police commission and planning boards as the state creates separate juvenile courts for Worcester and Springfield.
Fire record notes an overheated oven at 54 Abbott Si at 1:33 am. A short circuit at 149 Wahconah St. at 7:01 pm produced no fire. On Tuesday 6:55 am a St. Luke's unit BMC alarm trace sounded by accident with no fire.
